Track record: Prof Maitland (njm9@york.ac.uk) is currently YCR Professor of Molecular Biology and Director of the Cancer Research Unit at the University of York (since 1991). He is the Chairman of the British Prostate Group who has organized numerous national and international conferences on Prostate Disease and, as member of the Board of the European Society for Urological Research, he co-chaired the September 2003 World Congress for Urological Research in London. He is also a co-founder and member of the managing group of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Northern prostate collaborative, one of two centers of excellence for Prostate Cancer Research established in 2002 in the UK. He co-ordinates an EU FP5 program: Prostate Initiative for Gene Therapy (PIG). Furthermore, he will coordinate the FP6-project GIANT (Gene therapy: an Integrated Approach for Neoplastic Treatment). Although a basic scientist, he is committed to translational aspects of gene technology, serving on the UK NCRI Prostate Treatment committee (including gene and immunotherapy) and is a founder member of the British Society for Gene Therapy. His Unit is now housed in a new complex with managed facilities including state of the art genomic (microarray) proteomic (mass spectrometry), bioinformatics, fermenter scale production facilities for bacteria, yeast and mammalian cells, structural biology and cell imaging. |
